PERMITS:

An expedition in Greenland requires a permit issued from the Danish Polar Center in Copenhagen. To obtain a permit the following licences and certificates have to be turned in.

- Insurance Statement
A search and rescue operation in the Arctic is very expensiv. This is why the Danish Polar Center will only grant a permit if a proper insurance is taken out for the expedition. The SAR insurance must cover the amount of 1.000.000 DKR (134.000 EUR).

- Radio License
Expeditions in remote areas in Greenland are required to bring an approved (certified) emergency radio beacon (Personal Locator Beacon, PLB). Carrying PLBs and radio equipment in Greenland requires a special licence from TELE Greenland. To obtain this licence a valid radio operator certificate , the approvement certificate of the radio as well as the state assigned identification code (for 406 MHz PLBs) have to be submitted.

- Firearm Permit
Depending upon the activity area in Greenland, it is imperative to bring a firearm as well as polar bear deterrents. For that a written firearm permit must be obtained from Chief Constable of Greenland, P.O. Box 1006, DK 3900 Nuuk, Greenland.

Furthermore the Customs-, Police-, and Telecommuncation regulations of any country, through which your journey to Greenland will take you, have to be met. This is especially important for all radio equipment as well as any weapon transfer and will require further licences.

The entire permit procedure is fairly complex and time-consuming. The importance to start early - definitely before the 3-month deadline stated by the DPC - is highly recommended.
